Next-Generation Heat Treatment –

Sustainable Wood Modification at Competitive Cost

Next-Generation Thermal Modification

At WTT, we are proud to introduce the second generation of our heat treatment technology – a breakthrough that brings treatment costs down to levels comparable with traditional biocide impregnation. This technological advancement makes sustainable wood modification more accessible and economically viable than ever before.

Since delivering our first thermal modification plant in 2005, WTT has been a pioneer in developing advanced solutions for wood treatment. There are two fundamental approaches to thermal modification (TMT): oaen and closed systems. Open systems function as advanced drying kilns and are relatively simple to manufacture – resulting in many suppliers and increasing price competition in the market.

WTT has chosen a different path.

We specialize in the closed system – a more complex, yet significantly more effective solution. Instead of pyrolysis at high temperatures and atmospheric pressure, our technology uses hydrolysis at high pressure and lower temperatures. Pressure replaces heat, enabling a gentler yet deeper modification of the wood’s structure. This approach demands advanced engineering and precision manufacturing – and WTT is the only company that has successfully commercialized this technology on an industrial scale.

With the launch of our newly developed second-generation TMT system, we’ve taken another major leap forward. This innovation significantly strengthens our competitiveness and positions WTT as the leading provider of high-tech, sustainable heat treatment systems.

ThermoTreat 2.0

Market-Leading Performance and Competitiveness

ThermoTreat 2.0 is WTT’s most advanced and cost-effective thermo treatment solution to date. Built on over 15 years of proven experience, this second-generation plant delivers unmatched performance, flexibility, and efficiency for industrial wood modification.

Designed to process 2 to 3 batches per day, depending on wood type and thickness, ThermoTreat 2.0 is equipped with a high-efficiency energy and heat transfer system to ensure optimal results with every cycle.

At its core, the plant uses a gas- or oil-fired boiler to heat thermal oil, which serves as the heat transfer medium throughout both the heating and cooling phases. During cooling, excess heat is efficiently dissipated via a dry cooler, ensuring controlled energy use.

The treatment process is carried out in a pressurized, oxygen-free atmosphere, using only a small amount of water vapor. This approach guarantees consistent, high-quality modification while preserving the wood’s structural integrity.

Control is handled by the WTT ExoT system, an exclusive technology that provides industry-leading precision, automation, and process control.
